Pauline Palmer
1867–1938
follow artist

Born in 1867 in McHenry, Illinois, Pauline Lennards Palmer emerged as a prominent figure on the American art scene during the early 20th century. Growing up in a German immigrant family, Palmer developed a deep passion for art from a young age. After completing her education at a convent in Milwaukee, Palmer relocated to Chicago, where she began her career as an art supervisor in public schools. It was her marriage to Albert Palmer, a successful physician in Chicago, in 1891, that afforded her the opportunity to pursue art on a full-time basis.

Palmer subsequently trained at the Art Institute of Chicago, where she received instruction from renowned artists like William Merritt Chase and Frank Duveneck. Seeking further refinement of her skills, she spent three years studying at art academies in Paris, immersing herself in the vibrant artistic atmosphere of the city. Returning to Chicago in 1902, Palmer opened her own portrait salon at Tree Studios and went on to showcase her works extensively, earning the fond sobriquet, "Chicago's Painter Lady."

Throughout her career, Palmer exhibited her paintings both domestically and internationally, including at notable exhibitions hosted by the Paris Salon and art expositions in Naples, Italy. Renowned for her mastery of various mediums, such as oil, pastel, tempera, and watercolor, Palmer's subjects ranged from portraits to landscapes. Her artistic style evolved over time, transitioning from a dark, Tonalist academic approach to a more conservative Impressionism, which was characterized by vibrant colors and distinct brushstrokes.

A trailblazer within Chicago's artistic community, Palmer became the first woman to serve as president of the Chicago Society of Artists and founded the Association of Chicago Painters and Sculptors in 1923. Despite her untimely death in 1938, Palmer maintains a firm reputation as an important, early modern artist, in Chicago and beyond. Her works are now held by various institutions, such as the Rockford Art Museum in Illinois, Valparaiso University's Brauer Museum of Art in Indiana, the Provincetown Art Association in Massachusetts, and the San Diego Museum of Art.
