Jugendstil Decorative Arts Maker

Erhard & Söhne was founded in 1844 by Gottlieb Erhard and his two sons in Schwäbisch Gmünd, east of Stuttgart, and became especially known for retailing German Art Nouveau clothing accessories, decorative items, and dollhouse pieces. The company secured the world patent for manufacturing brass inlay in 1904, not long before producing this impressively detailed Jugendstil inlaid playing card box with card soldiers circa 1910. Composed of brass and palisander, or rosewood, the lid of this charming example features knights in armor on horseback wearing different card suits.
