William Kentridge's 'Preparing the Flute'

The present drawing is part of William Kentridge's Preparing the Flute, one of two bodies of work that the the artist created in conjunction with his 2005 production of Mozart's The Magic Flute, which was commissioned by La Monnaie / De Munt and premiered in Brussels. Encompassing drawings, models, and 35mm film animations, the series was instrumental in exploring and expressing Kentridge's vision of the theatrical stage as a camera, as well as using the opera's themes of darkness and light to critique the Enlightenment, colonialism, and the figure of the benevolent dictator.
