Primordial Forms

The Work of Stephen De Staebler

Stephen De Staebler was a pivotal figure in the California clay movement best known for his fragmented human forms that seem to have been dug from the earth. In 2012, he was posthumously awarded the American Craft Council's Gold Medal in recognition for his extraordinary body of work as well as his enormous impact as an educator who taught for over three decades.


The human figure is the most loaded of all forms because we live in one.
