Born in Budapest in 1910, Gwendolyn Cafritz became one of the most influential figures in Washington, DC’s social and philanthropic circles. She moved to the United States in the 1920s and soon found herself at the heart of the capital’s elite society. After marrying real estate magnate Morris Cafritz, she established herself as a celebrated hostess, known for her grand soirées that attracted political leaders, celebrities, and foreign dignitaries. Throughout the 1940s and 1950s, she vied with Pearl Mesta for the title of Washington’s premier socialite, hosting elaborate gatherings at her fifty-seven-room mansion on Foxhall Road NW. The present lot, a sleek table in hornbeam wood, was custom designed for the home by architect Eugene Schoen.

Beyond her role in high society, Mrs. Cafritz was deeply committed to philanthropy. She and her husband established the Morris & Gwendolyn Cafritz Foundation in 1948, channeling millions of dollars into community service, the arts, education, and civil rights initiatives. Even after Morris's passing, she remained a steadfast benefactor, ensuring the foundation’s continued impact. She was also a vocal advocate for women's rights and civil liberties, using her influence to support progressive causes.

Despite declining health in the 1970s, she remained active in Washington’s social and charitable spheres, hosting occasional events and continuing her philanthropic efforts. She passed away in 1988 at the age of seventy-eight after a battle with cancer, leaving behind three sons, thirteen grandchildren, and a legacy of generosity. The Morris & Gwendolyn Cafritz Foundation remains a testament to her dedication, continuing to enhance the quality of life in the Washington, DC metropolitan area.
