Boldly expressive and charged with energy, the works of Jonathan Lyndon Chase depict queer Black subjectivity and community. Born and based in Philadelphia, Chase received their MFA from the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in 2016 and they began to receive recognition in 2018 with solo exhibitions in New York and Los Angeles. Chase has described themselves as the love-child of Missy Elliott and Romare Bearden, and their practice extends across disciplines including painting, sculpture, video, and installation. Chase, as Miss Rosen writes, "creates powerful pictures of queer black life, rendering intimate moments with extraordinary tenderness and nuance. In [their] hands, the canvas becomes the space to craft a new visual language to explore the intersections of race, gender, and sexuality, in vivid, visceral, and raw works that combine painting, sculpture, drawing, and collage." Chase's work is included in the collections of the Whitney Museum of American Art, Brooklyn Museum, Walker Art Center, ICA Miami, High Art Museum, and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, among others.
