The present lot was a gift from the artist to Billy Klüver (1927–2004), a Swedish-American engineer and influential figure in the intersection of art and technology. Trained as an electrical engineer, Klüver worked at Bell Telephone Laboratories, where he collaborated with prominent artists such as Andy Warhol, Jean Tinguely, and Robert Rauschenberg, helping them integrate advanced technology into their work. In 1966, he co-founded Experiments in Art and Technology (E.A.T.), a groundbreaking organization that fostered collaboration between artists and engineers, paving the way for new forms of interdisciplinary art. Klüver's visionary efforts bridged the gap between creative expression and technological innovation, leaving a lasting legacy in both the art and engineering worlds.
In 1968, E.A.T. organized an artist-in-residence project called The Quarry: MLA-ALA Exploratory Lithographic Workshop. This initiative was a collaboration between E.A.T. and Local No. 1 of the Amalgamated Lithographers of America, providing artists with access to the Local’s facilities and equipment, as well as support from E.A.T. Artist Marjorie Strider was one of four artists to participate during the project’s first year, alongside Robert Rauschenberg, Mel Bochner, and Brice Marden.
