Wright Auction

This portrait of the artist Marcel Varin painted by Sir Francis Cyril Rose comes from the collection of Gertrude Stein and hung in the salon of her apartment at 27 rue de Fleurus in Paris, which she shared with partner Alice Toklas. It occupied the wall above the fireplace alongside Pablo Picasso’s portrait of Gertrude Stein and Paul Cézanne’s portrait of his wife, Marie-Hortense Fiquet. The portrait can be seen in this 1934 photograph of the apartment held in the collection of The Metropolitan Museum of Art.
