A member of the La Jolla Band of Luiseno Indians, Fritz Scholder (1937-2005) described himself as a “non-Indian Indian.” His post-modern, Pop-inflected depictions of Native Americans and life in the United States are said to have “forever broke[n] the mold of what Indian painting had been,” as the Los Angeles Times reported upon the artist’s death in 2005. Scholder studied in his youth with Wayne Thiebaud, created lithographs with the Tamarind Institute, and would influence a new generation of Native American artists, in large part through his teaching role at the Institute of American Indian Arts (IAIA) in the 1960s.
