The current work dates to a period in Ferren’s career when the artist was exploring the rising movement of Abstract Expressionism. At the time, many of his contemporaries were painting with vibrant hues of red, blue, and occasionally green but here, Ferren chose to use pastels and earth-tones as a subdued backdrop to the calligraphic lines forming the biomorphic shape at the center of the composition.
