Grawunder earned a degree in architecture from California Polytechnic State University in 1984.

After graduation she moved to Italy and worked for Sottsass Associati, where she later became a partner in 1989.

In 2001, she left Sottsass and founded her own studio, creating work across a spectrum of design from large-scale public projects to limited-edition furniture.

Grawunder's specialty is lighting: sculptural installations and objects that complement and enhance the architecture that surrounds them.

Two of her primary concerns are energy efficiency and longevity and, to that end, she utilizes fluorescent tubing and favors basic, durable materials such as stainless steel, steel cables, and painted metal.
I’m an architect by training. I like straight lines. It doesn’t mean I won’t do a curve now and then, but I do like straight lines. I like the idea of order and geometry and to follow the basics, which would be technology, material science, function.
