Tying It Together

Anton Alvarez’s Thread Wrapping Machine


While studying Design Products as a graduate student at London’s Royal College of Art, Anton Alvarez created an entirely new method of constructing furniture: the Thread Wrapping Machine. Alvarez’s custom machine “ties” an object together by wrapping it in hundreds of feet of thread that is simultaneously coated in glue. Alvarez considers his method to be a novel genre of fabrication, one that he is free to adapt as he pleases: “I have full control over the development of the machine...I can freely experiment and develop it according to what I discover are my needs in this new craft.”
