Zaha Hadid was a visionary architect and designer whose bold, futuristic structures reshaped the landscape of contemporary architecture. Born on October 31, 1950, in Baghdad, Iraq, Hadid grew up in a progressive household that valued education and culture. She studied mathematics at the American University of Beirut before moving to London in 1972 to attend the Architectural Association School of Architecture, where she studied under renowned architects such as Rem Koolhaas.

Hadid founded her own practice, Zaha Hadid Architects, in London in 1980. Early in her career, she was known for radical, highly conceptual works that often remained unbuilt. Her breakthrough came with the completion of the Vitra Fire Station in Weil am Rhein, Germany, in 1993. From there, she continued to gain international recognition, designing a wide range of projects that included museums, stadiums, opera houses, and transportation hubs. Among her most iconic works are the MAXXI Museum in Rome, the London Aquatics Centre for the 2012 Olympics, the Guangzhou Opera House in China, and the Heydar Aliyev Center in Baku, Azerbaijan — each showcasing her signature style of sweeping curves and organic fluidity.

In 2004, Zaha Hadid became the first woman to receive the Pritzker Architecture Prize, the most prestigious award in the field. She later received the RIBA Gold Medal in 2016, another historic first for a woman, among countless other awards and recognitions, listed in full on her firm’s website.

Beyond architecture, Hadid also left her mark in industrial and furniture design. She collaborated with brands like Alessi, Louis Vuitton, and Swarovski, creating products ranging from sculptural shoes to sleek furniture pieces that echoed her architectural language.
