When describing their collection to the Calvin College Center Art Gallery for an upcoming publication, Martin Packard reflected, “the collection becomes the mosaic.” The visual diversity invoked by Martin is evident in the works themselves, spanning multiple genres from decorative to fine art, folk art to postmodernism, and everything in between. In their early days, the Grand Rapids-based couple combined their individual perspectives on collecting, with Enid’s trained artist's eye complementing Martin’s art historical interests. As their collection expanded, they honed their focus and learned to “trust their own judgment.” Over the following decades, guided by principle and endless curiosity, Martin and Enid assembled an important collection of works by some of the most influential artists of the 20th century.
