Yuji Ueda was born in 1975 to a family of tea growers in Shigaraki, Japan, one of Japan's Six Ancient Kilns and one of the oldest pottery producing places in Japan. Growing up in a region with a rich ceramic heritage, Ueda was exposed to the art form from an early age. This early exposure instilled in him a deep appreciation for the craft, leading him to pursue formal studies in ceramics. He studied under acclaimed ceramicist Yasuhisa Kohyama in 2002 and soon went on to experiment on his own with various glazes, eventually building his own anagama (a traditional Japanese wood-burning kiln).

What sets Ueda apart in the world of ceramics is his ability to blend ancient techniques with a contemporary aesthetic. His work often features organic shapes and textures, with a strong emphasis on the natural beauty of the materials. Ueda is known for his innovative glazing techniques, which result in unique surface textures and colors that evoke natural landscapes and elements. He created a custom process whereby he uses blocks of Choseki feldspar or builds up irregular clay surfaces prior to firing in his anagama, and his pieces often appear as though they have been shaped by the forces of nature rather than by human hands.

One of Ueda's signature techniques is the use of natural ash glazes, which are a result of carefully controlling the kiln atmosphere during firing. This method allows for a high degree of unpredictability and spontaneity, resulting in each piece being truly one-of-a-kind. The surfaces of his ceramics often feature a rich, earthy palette, with subtle variations and intricate details that invite closer inspection. Ueda's commitment to pushing the boundaries of ceramic art with his innovative techniques and dedication to his craft has earned him a reputation as a leading figure in contemporary Japanese ceramics.
