Born in 1941, Chicago-based painter Errol Ortiz has often been influenced by current events and social movements, and his work integrates elements of comic books, puzzles, and pop culture. After training at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Ortiz took a trip to Mexico and, upon returning, joined the Chicago Imagists through his connection with artist and curator Don Baum. While Ortiz has been exhibited widely as part of group exhibitions over the years, his first solo show came in 2015, when Chicago’s National Museum of Mexican Art (NMMA) hosted De vuelta: Works by Chicago Imagist Errol Ortiz. Known for his bold, colorful acrylic compositions, Ortiz’s career has spanned five decades, with his art featured in the collections of the NMMA, the Lubeznik Center for the Arts in Michigan City, Indiana, and elsewhere. In 2018, the Chicago Sun-Times cited Ortiz’s work as part of an article covering Mexico’s significant influence on Chicago art.
