I believe beauty to be the reason for art; this beauty can be sad, unsettling, or conflicted and may have nothing in common with mainstream attractiveness, but finally I admire that which maintains an aesthetic universalism after the politics of the time change. I am attracted to certain honest clichés - the nude, the face, flowers, Venice.
