Swiss designer Hans Bellmann studied at the Bauhaus from 1931 to 1933, where he met Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and, after graduating, joined Mies van der Rohe’s firm as an architect. Bellmann established his own studio in Zurich in the 1940s, where he began to explore designing furniture based on his tenets of structure and simplicity. Though meant to seat multiple people, the present lot is reminiscent of Bellmann’s famed “Einpunktstuhl,” or “one-point chair,” which he designed with Max Bill several years prior. As its name implies, the Einpunkstuhl was fastened with a single screw; this fastidious attention to simplicity is reflected in the Rare Sitwell settee, in which the sheepskin-upholstered body appears to float, cradled by three elegantly curved legs.
