The Womb chair was designed by Eero Saarinen for Knoll in 1946. The expressive, enveloping curves of the Womb Chair echo Saarinen’s sculptural architecture, from the TWA Terminal (now the TWA Hotel) at New York’s JFK Airport to the Gateway Arch in St. Louis. Florence Knoll challenged Saarinen to create a chair that she could curl up in, like “a basket full of pillows.”

The present example features Guise fabric in Flint from The Nick Cave Collection by Knoll. Like Nick Cave’s Soundsuits, Guise is created by intricately layering multiple techniques and materials. Space-dyed, twisted, and chenille yarns combine to create a top layer that pairs with a taffeta-like ground fabric with a subtle sheen.
