At Sea

The Hybridized Paintings of Reena Spaulings

The seascapes of Reena Spaulings—a moniker and composite identity—are made using a robot who was originally engineered to mop floors: the Scooba 450. In place of the human hand, the “strokes” of paint trace the movements of the machine dragging through “Estate Emulsions” housepaint manufactured by Farrow & Ball. Firmly of our moment in history, Spaulings’s Seascapes (named in reference to 19th century English painter William Turner) question the intersections of art, authorship, and technology, building on a growing body of work deliberately prodding at those boundaries.
