A pioneer of photorealism, British painter John Salt early on gravitated towards depicting the world of the automobile and arrested American mobility—indeed, a series of paintings featuring car upholstery directly reproduced from a Buick catalogue was among his earliest photorealist works. He would then shift away from glossy consumerism and towards vehicles in various stages of decay and destruction, from cars showing wear and tear to the outright wrecks that he would perhaps become most known for.
