Celebrated sculptor Louise Nevelson's longtime studio assistant, Diane MacKown, is an accomplished, Yale-trained photographer in her own right. For many years, MacKown had immediate access to Nevelson, collaborating with her professionally and engaging with her personally. Prior to Nevelson's death in 1988, MacKown took various opportunities to photograph Nevelson in casual Polaroids and more formal portraits. In some cases, Nevelson would playfully embellish the prints with drawings, as is the case with the present lot. This work was featured in the Pavers exhibition at Schroeder Romero & Shredder Gallery in New York City from November 18, 2010 through January 22, 2011. A large selection of MacKown's photographs of Nevelson was also shown in late 2019 at the Galleries at Saint Peter's Church.
