Originally from New Orleans, she began her career in the 1930s as an operetta singer, acted in several Hollywood movies including the Marx Brothers classic ‘A Night at the Opera’, and became best known as the panelist on the television quiz show ‘To Tell the Truth’.
In later years, she became an avid patron and supporter of the performing arts serving on the boards of various New York City cultural institutions. In 1976 she was appointed chairman of the New York Council of the Arts, where she served for 20 years.
