These three astronauts are the prime crew members of the Apollo 16 lunar landing mission. They are, left to right, Thomas K. Mattingly II, Command Module Pilot; John W. Young, Commander; and Charles M. Duke Jr., Lunar Module Pilot. [NASA caption] 

“I can appreciate what a magnificent series of events came together to allow that [the Apollo Moon landings] to happen_and it’s people. [...] It was being part of a team that was dedicated to something that transcended individual aspirations. [...] Human nature being what it is, people have to have something they can put [their arms around]. [...] There has to be a symbol. The folks who made the trip were the symbol. And that’s unfortunate. [...] That’s what Apollo was. It was thousands of people who were willing to work day and night. Not being compensated, not compared to what they put in. [...] The extraordinary things that can be accomplished when you [dedicate] yourself to the end result instead of your personal temporal consideration.”
