Shortly after India's first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru’s death in May 1964, the Government of India commissioned the newly established National Institute of Design in Ahmadabad to create an international exhibition about Nehru and his India. NID, in turn, asked the Eames Office to consult on the project. The exhibition was designed and built at NID in Ahmadabad. Ray Eames and Deborah Sussman were actively involved on site and Alexander Girard also joined the effort. Robert Staples spent two months in Ahmedabad working on final designs and production, and then oversaw the installation at its first four venues: New York City, London, and Washington (all 1965) and Los Angeles (1966).
