Beginning in the late 1960s, Robert Motherwell and his third wife, Helen Frankenthaler, were exploring new mediums. Working with Helen's sister, famed tapestry maker Gloria F. Ross, they began to create tapestries. Motherwell worked using a hands-on approach throughout the entire process.
