Vase, model 3031 was originally part of a housewares collection submitted by Alvar Aalto to the Karhula-Iittala design competition of 1936. It would later come to be known as the Savoy vase after it was used in the Savoy Restaurant in 1937.
This particularly early example exhibits an amber hue and ridges along the base indicating that it was formed using a wood mold that slowly smoldered around the hot glass. A difficult material, the wood molds were later replaced with steel allowing the glass to stay in a molten state longer to reach a standardized shape.
