Founded in the early 20th century by Pittsburgh Industrialist James McKay, the McKay Company initially manufactured automotive parts before moving into furniture design. Inspired by the car bumpers of the early 1930s, the company created a line of chrome-plated furniture for outdoor use featuring sleek metal strapping with Art Deco lines. Designs similar to the present lot were included in The McKay Lounge in the Hall of Science at the Chicago World's fair in 1933.
