In 1919 Gerrit Rietveld designed the first Elling cabinet. The original example, executed in oak, was acquired by architect Piet Elling and later destroyed in a fire. In 1951, cabinetmaker G.A. van de Groenekan rebuilt the Elling cabinet under Rietveld's supervision for an exhibition at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam. Subsequently, van de Groenekan produced a small number of made-to-order examples, including the present lot.
Cabinet features four drawers and two doors concealing one shelf. Paper manufacturer's label to underside ‘G.A.v.d Groenekan Utrechtseweg 315, DE BILT’. Sold with the original invoice from Het Goede Meubel.
