Signed to lower right ‘J. Burnett’.
A protégé of Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Joseph Burnett was a renaissance man—he painted, designed furniture and practiced architecture. Burnett attended the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago before being hired by Mies van der Rohe whom he had studied architecture under, working with him for six years before moving on to other notable firms. In 1951 Burnett was awarded first prize in the Museum of Modern Art’s influential Low Cost Lighting Competition for his model T-1-B table lamp. Later in his career he focused more on painting with gallery representation in both Chicago and New York until his death in 2011.
