Stamped to verso 'No 5651 Embossed Inlaid Standard Gauge Armstrong's Linoleum'.
Armstrong's Linoleum, based in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, designed forward-thinking Modernist flooring, inspired by contemporary art currents and geometric minimalism. The 1940s bought about the advent of well-designed everyday products available to mass consumers, as was prevalent in Europe in the previous decades, as well as a new-found passion among the middle-class for interior decorating.
The Armstong's Linoleum catalog that this tile was featured in urged customers to "use your own ideas...a bit of imagination, a good knowledge of your family and its needs, and your own good taste are just about the only requirements for good, pleasing home decoration."
