The present lot was included the groundbreaking exhibition Ambiguous Objecthood at Peter Joseph Gallery in 1994 alongside masterworks in various medium by Wendell Castle. According to correspondence from the gallery, Castle was particularly fond of this work and considered it to be a self-portrait.
