Hudson 1950–2014

Hudson, known only by his last name, remains one of the most influential and admired gallerists of his time. Born in New Haven, Connecticut in 1950, Hudson studied art and was a dancer and performance artist before becoming director of live events at Chicago’s Randolph Street Gallery. In 1984, Hudson opened Feature in Chicago as a “hands-on” gallery that championed originality and thought-provoking works of art. In August of 1988, Feature Inc. moved to New York where it would occupy six different locations over the next twenty-one years. Often showing two or three exhibitions simultaneously, Hudson rebelled against the notion of artist-as-celebrity and rejected the corporate gallery model. His impact on artists, writers and like-minded gallerists became ever-more apparent in the outpouring of tributes after his sudden death in 2014.

I prefer art that is complex and multi-focused because it isn't an easy read, or easy to explain.

Hudson was an artist who opened a gallery. As far as I know Hudson didn't have any plans. He wanted to do what he felt and what he thought was right.

Richard Prince

Hudson was unique. He was a visionary—and when he looked at art, he looked intently and he always made up his own mind. That was so obvious to those who knew him. He loved art, artists, and people involved with art. That is much of what Feature was, a place for that love to happen.
