Born in Athens in 1923, artist Yannis Gaitis' early abstract paintings were not well received by critics. He moved to Paris in 1954, where he began incorporating figurative imagery in his work, transforming his mostly gestural paintings into distinct compositions. Gaitis developed his little men, or anthropaki in the early 1960s. The faceless figures symbolized middle class propriety, and expressed feelings of alienation and conformity in the modernist climate. The anthropaki quickly became a trademark of Gaitis' work, and would appear in various forms and iterations until his death in 1984.
