Howard Dearstyne was the first American to graduate from the Bauhaus with a degree in Architecture. The present lot, Untitled (Self Portrait), was taken during this pivotal time, while Dearstyne was studying alongside the likes of Mies van der Rohe, Wassily Kandinsky and Joesf Albers to name a few. Upon returning to the states in 1934, Dearstyne worked as an architect until 1941 when, at the recommendation of Mies van der Rohe, he accepted position at Black Mountain College marking the first of several teaching positions held by Dearstyne throughout his career. His memoir, Inside the Bauhaus was published posthumously in 1986 and gave a firsthand account of his time at the famous school.
