Schultz was fascinated by the fluidized bed system used by Knoll to coat Saarinen pedestals and Bertoia chairs. As a result, he developed a number of furniture designs and companion objects, such as this vase, that utilized the same process. The exploration of these sculptural objects led directly to the development of the petal table bases.
