Information View Lots View Catalog

Noteworthy works of art and interesting designs from all over the globe unite in Wright’s bi-annual Art + Design auction. This sale features a distinct selection of works exploring abstract themes from the 1960s and 1970s with pieces by César Andrade, Manuel Merida, Larry Zox and Sidney Wolfson among others. Most significant among the offerings is a stunning work, titled Physichromie No. 688 by Carlos Cruz-Diez, one of the key 20th century thinkers in the realm of color. A collection of Italian paintings from the Collection of Evelyn Brindis Demmer as well as an outstanding selection of works by Charles Biederman from a private collection also stand out within the sale.

A select preview will be on view in both our Chicago and New York galleries beginning February 16th.

In my case, I used the elements of these simple forms — square, cube, line and color — to produce logical systems. Most of these systems were finite; that is, they were complete using all possible variations. This kept them simple.

Property from the Collection of Evelyn Brindis Demmer

Evelyn Brindis Demmer was a Milwaukee-based fashion designer famous for her psychedelic works for her family’s Kickerino shoe brand. Kickerino Go-Go boots were featured on television shows such as Shindig and Hullabaloo. As part of her work in the fashion industry, Evelyn often traveled to Milan. It was there that she befriended Giuseppe Bergamini, the proprietor of the legendary Galleria Bergamini. As an active collector of Italian art, she not only bought several works from the gallery, but also brought back an additional nine paintings to sell. In 1958, out of her Fox Point home, she mounted a selling exhibition and sold out the show. The exhibition was written up by Frank Getlein in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel under the headline “Housewife Discovers ‘Do It Yourself’ Fine Art Importing.” She mounted one more exhibition that same year to a similar acclaim. The following fifteen lots are from Ms. Brindis Demmer’s personal collection, some of which were exhibited in her DIY art shows of 1958 and have remained with her ever since. They form a snapshot of place and time when the art world was a much more intimate place.
