Wright Auction

Matt Mullican creates and appropriates countless symbols that he applies to canvases and tapestries in a controlled palette of black, white, red, yellow, green and blue. These colors each have associations assigned by the artist; black and white are connected with the written word, while red invokes the idea of individual subjectivity. This work hints at legibility, but is ultimately undecipherable. Each viewer will bring their own subjectivity to a reading of the work and in the process grapple with the very ideas that Mullican is engaged with, primarily how meaning is created and communicated by culturally mandated channels such as language and by extension advertising, political discourse, etc.
