The Sphinx by David Edstrom was exhibited at the Panama-Pacific Exposition in 1915, an event celebrating the completion of the Panama Canal and unofficially showcasing San Francisco’s recovery from the earthquake that devastated the city just nine years earlier. For 26 years this dramatic work was in the private collection of an antique dealer, which is why it was published as whereabouts unknown. - Adam Blackman
