During a 1989 meeting at the Royalton Hotel in New York, Laske and Starck discussed Laske’s designs for an ashtray that would be produced by Starck’s company, OWO. At the end of the meeting Starck sketched four of Laske's designs from memory on one of his studio mailing envelopes and Laske added two small sketches of his Vesuvius ashtray.
