Born in Upland, California, Betty Davenport Ford developed an early passion for art and design, which she would later combine with her innate love of animals. She pursued her artistic education at Scripps College in Claremont, California, earning a BA in ceramic sculpture. Seeking to further refine her skills, she continued her studies at Cranbrook Academy of Art in Michigan, where she obtained an MFA and found inspiration in the work of Finnish-American architect and designer Eliel Saarinen.

Ford became widely recognized for her ability to distill the essence of animals into clay, emphasizing form and movement over intricate detail. Her sculptures often featured stylized representations of wildlife—bears, birds, and mountain lions—reflecting both a modernist sensibility and a deep connection to the natural world. Drawn to the rugged beauty of the American West, she captured the strength and grace of its fauna through powerful, expressive forms.

Throughout her career, Ford exhibited her work in galleries and museums across the United States.
