The range of Ruth Duckworth’s oeuvre, from organic earthenware vessels to her ghostly porcelain standing sculptures, makes her a complicated figure in art history. It’s telling that Duckworth assisted in the production of puppets, ammunitions, and gravestones before becoming an artist. She was able to blur the distinctions between ceramics and sculpture by infusing biomorphism into non-traditional studio practices. This rare monumental example highlights her ability to charge organic forms with a primitive psychological intensity.
