In 1947, straight out of high school, Dolores Houtman (née Mast) was hired by Herman Miller as an office assistant becoming the first female employee aside from the seamstresses on the production team. Already friends with Max DePree from school, Dolores went on to build friendships with George Nelson and Charles and Ray Eames who later would help her and her husband decorate their first home.
