A New Medium

Ceramic plates by David Smith

In 1964, David Smith was one of twelve American artists invited by Art in America to create an edition in ceramic. For the publication and show Smith created a circular bas-relief in an edition of fifty. Intrigued by the new medium, Smith went on to work from a live model to paint and carve dramatic nudes on plates; each of these works are unique and three of the nudes were also included in the traveling exhibition.

It wasn't until I forgot all that ceramic crap that I could make something I liked.
