enameled steel, paper, brass, chrome-plated steel 42 h × 14 w × 48 d in (107 × 36 × 122 cm)
This design received the special prize in the Museum of Modern Art's Lamp Design competition of 1951. This design was the only lamp from the competition that was retained by the MoMA for their permanent collection. There are three variants of this lamp; the earliest examples feature a two part shade with a brass housing and clip-in paper or fiberglass shade. Because the clip-in shade was easily damaged, the design was modified to have a more durable spun aluminum shade. Ultimately the lamp’s two-part shade was replaced with a solid spun aluminum shade.
This early example features a two-part shade made of brass and paper.
