Sound and tone was a central concern of Bertoia’s work from the 1950s on. His Sonambient series of kinetic and aural sculptures combine musicality within simplified geometric compositions. The Gong series explores the physical properties of sound in ancient and essential forms. This example is the largest of the hollow-copper gongs. The surface and shape - each side featuring a landscape of craters and mounds with a carefully applied patina - has an organic simplicity and elegance. Suspended from a central point, this gong has a kinetic energy and a deep rich sound that resonates gracefully.
