burled sequoia, douglas fir 18 h × 67 w × 60 d in (46 × 170 × 152 cm)
This coffee table and stool illustrate J.B. Blunk’s mastery of woodworking and the ever-present influence of Isamu Noguchi. A massive plank of giant sequoia burl wood is painstakingly carved and planed, leaving an isolated plateau in the center of the table. Appearing as a landscape, the table and stool echo the northern California coastline near the home and studio of the artist. J.B. Blunk custom-made this table and stool for friend, collaborator and neighbor, Sim Van der Ryn. Van der Ryn, the official state architect of California during the 1970s (appointed by Jerry Brown), is widely renowned for his sustainable architecture.
Stool measures 15 dia x 16.5 h inches. Carved signature to edge of table: [JB 75].
