During the early 1950s, Gio Ponti created sketches and maquettes featuring an ovoid table with a sculptural void. (See Gio Ponti Archives, Item No. 07045.) Due to the complex nature of the design, the table was not profitable for mass production and only a few related artisan-crafted examples were produced as Ponti refined his design.
