The ability to manufacture a chair without back legs was a phenomenon mastered with the introduction of tubular steel furniture. The Zig-Zag chair was Rietveld's reaction to and mastery of the cantilever concept. He designed the form to imitate planes intersecting in space rather than within the object itself. Signed with branded manufacturer's mark to underside of each example: [G.A. van de Groenekan].
