Richard Stankiewicz created sculptures in the 1970s that utilize four elements held in a tense balance. The gravity-defying compositions of 1971 and 1972 display a keen understanding of classic modernist sculpture akin to the work of David Smith. 1971-3 is a prime example from this period using an I-beam on point, an angled rod and a cylinder, creating a figure four composition. This sculpture is the third sculpture made by Stankiewicz in 1971.
